Call for Papers
Conference theme: Behold the Human
What is human? What changes have occurred in the human realm (renjian)? What challenges have impacted on the humanities? Where do we locate the human as biological, sociopolitical, and ecological beings? In what forms do and can they exist? These questions need answers now more than ever. The first ACCL biennial conference to be held fully in person since the pandemic can be the right moment for us—we scholars of Chinese and Comparative Literature—to reflect on the accelerating changes that have unsettled the humancentric knowledge, humanist creations, and human positions in the world. At a new epoch when the posthuman arrives, the inhuman prevails, and anti-humanism edges into political culture, we are facing the unknown and uncertain—a perfect chaos where we can behold the human once again.
A reexamination of the literary representations of the human in epistemological, moral, and aesthetic terms is the main task of the 2024 ACCL conference. We invite scholars to present research on (but not limited to) the following topics: revisiting traditional humanism, the use and abuse of the humane literature, the modern constructs/deconstructions of the human, the return/disappearance of the human in a world of things, the approaches to humanistic traditions in their local cultural and linguistic contexts, the Anthropocene and its discontents, and various forms of the extensions and mutations of the human in poetry, drama, and the novel; in classics, religious texts, and modernist literature; in popular culture, genre fiction, and cinema; and in public media, social media, games and metaverse, etc. We welcome theoretical interventions, historical studies, and cultural analyses in relation to Chinese/Sinophone literary discourse on the human/inhuman/posthuman.
Conference participants are encouraged to add their new thoughts to the above theme, and we look forward to a free exchange of ideas that can help us look more deeply into the human.
